Extensions Care Guide

You may have had hair extensions in the past, but it is always a good idea to refresh your memory on proper care. Follow these pro tips to get the most out of your beautiful new hair!

Zodiac hair extensions are human hair that are single donor, cuticle in tact, remi hair, that can be worn by both clients that have curly or straight hair. They typically last about 6-12 months depending on general care, and quality of products used, however we always have those outliers who can go up to 18 months without replacing their hair! It is important to remember that not all hair extensions are created equal, when you buy new hair it may be slightly different than the last time because, that hair did not come from the same head of hair. Another thing to remember is that extension hair does not have a natural hydration source like your natural hair does, so keeping it moisturized, so reducing dryness is crucial.

Move Ups: It is vital that you see your stylist to get extensions moved up every 6 to 8 weeks depending on how quickly your hair grows.

Wash & Condition: While over washing can lead to dryness, so can under washing. The key is to wash your hair often enough that it stays hydrated and you are not needing to use dry shampoo. Be sure to wash and rinse well in between wefts and be careful not to create tension or pull hairline.

Avoid using dry shampoo on your extensions as it will over dry the extension hair. Do not flip hair over (upside down) when washing because it will create too much weight and tension in the wrong direction of the hair follicle.

Do not flip head over and wrap the hair in a towel as the twisting tension can cause breakage. You can use a microfiber turban to loosely hold the hair while absorbing excess water from the hair.

Be sure to condition the hair daily on non wash days with a leave in.

Tip: Sweat is salty like swimming in the ocean so be sure to rinse/wash after a hard workout

Products:  Read your labels! Choose products that are free of sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, alcohol denat, ethanol, sd alcohol 40, propanol, isopropyl, and propyl, formaldehyde, and parabens. Here is a list of products you will need:

  1. Shampoo- use every wash routine.
  2. Conditioner- use every wash routine. A Deep Conditioning Mask can be used in place of conditioner every other wash to rehydrate.
  3. Leave-In Conditioner/ detangling spray every day on mids and ends
  4. Serum/Oil-  use on ends daily.  Look for products that contain Argon oil
  5. Brush- use daily and as needed.
  6. Silk or Satin Pillowcase or bonnet- satin pillowcase is an alternative if silk is not an option

Brushing: Carefully brushing your extensions daily is important. Use caution to remove knots while not catching or pulling on the extension weft. Start brushing at the end of the hair and move up towards the wefts, while securing the wefts with your other hand. Be sure to brush on the underside of the wefts to ensure that natural hair is not tangling under the wefts.

Sleeping:  If not using a bonnet, secure hair into a low and loose braids, or heatless curls to keep hair from getting tangled while sleeping.

Styling: Prevent heat damage by using a heat protector, and use low to medium heat on your extensions. Extensions can be air dried. Tip: If you prefer a wavy look, apply your leave in conditioning cream, detangle, scrunch and air dry.

Enjoy your beautiful new hair! Thank you for choosing Zodiac Hair Extensions
