The 6 Supplements that may be effect your hair loss and shedding- and it is not what you think!

supplements that effect hair loss, shedding, and hair growth. Not minoxodil, or biotin

If you are struggling with hair loss, thinning hair, brittle hair that keeps breaking off, read more to find out what you can do to support healthy, thicker, stronger hair.

The struggle of hair loss and thinning hair is real, and it affects both men and women starting as young as 20 years old! There are factors to consider with diet, gut health, stress, hormones, scalp health, and genetics. In this article we are going to break down each of these factors and give you tips on how you can have the best defense for longer, stronger, thicker hair for many years to come.

First lets talk gut health:

You can take all the right supplements, but if your gut has inflammation, and isn’t functioning properly, you won’t absorb what your body needs. This is one reason people suffer from “Ozempic Hair Loss” or hair loss after weight loss surgery. Aside from inflammation, an imbalance in the gut microbiome can contribute to dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and inflammation around the hair follicle.

Your gut also helps regulate hormones including estrogen and androgens. So if your function is off, then estrogen metabolism becomes inefficient, androgen levels become imbalanced, and DHT activity can increase, leanding to androgenic alopecia (read on for more on this topic).

Your body has a different view on hair than you do. For you, it’s expression of personality, part of your identity, a contributor to your confidence, and even plays a roll in being hot or cold. To your body- it is a luxury that is not necessary to sustain life. So if something is going on internally- hair is the first to go, and last to come back. Which is why it is vital to pay attention to shedding before it becomes a noticeable problem that will take longer to reverse. From diet or health issues, when absorbtion of nutrients is low, and that inflammation needs to be addressed internally. Such as Iron, Vitamin D, Protein, and Zinc.

Stress:

We live in a high stress world, and stress leads to high cortisol levels which pushes hair into a shedding phase often called telogen effluvium. It disrupts the hair growth cycle, and weakens the follicle function. Supporting the nervous system is just as important as supporting the follicle. Key supporting ingredients would include adaptogens, and ashwagandha. Finding ways to manange stress through daily lifestyle regulation may look like taking time for; mindfulness, breathing, stretching, and supplements can aid in managing your cortisol levels.

Hormones:

Hormonal shifts from postpartum, thyroid, and menopause can lead to thinning hair. Be sure to have your bloodwork done with your primary care physician to see where some hormone therapies or thyroid support can help reduce hormone related hair shed.

Genetics:

This one is less tricky than you think. Many people have a bi-product of testosterone called Dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. This bi-product binds to hair follicles, reduces the size of hair follicles, blocks follicles, and starves the oxygen to the hair follicles, resulting in follicle dormancy and death. It is most commonly noticed with finer hairs that taper off and don’t seem to get longer.

You feel like you have an excess amount of flyaway hairs around your hairline and your part that you didn’t used to have. You ask your stylist, “Is this breakage?”, but it seems unexplainable. Maybe it’s your blow dryer, your brush, pulling it back to often, or what color you are using, or maybe you are genetically prone to producing DHT.

Androgenic alopecia effects 80% of the population and is often called male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness. In men, about 30% show signs before the age of 30, 50% before age 50, and 80% in their lifetime. It shows up at the crown of the head, and moves forward to the temples.

For women, androgenic alopecia effects 40% of women before the hit perimenopause. It shows up around the temples, the crown, and connects through a widening part and thinning at the top, front hairline. For some, it is diffused thinning and loss of density, which leads to a mislabeled stress or hormonal loss and goes underdiagnosed. It is common to feel like it isn’t too bad yet, and your hair doens’t seem thin, so you decide “it’s okay.”

Regardless of your age or gender, don’t ignore the signs. You start to notice that your head is easily sunburned, when it didn’t used to be, the shower drain is getting clogged, noticing more shed of hair on your floor, your pillow, your shirt, and in your brush. Your bangs don’t lay right, your cowlick is making your hair part weird in the back, your part is flat, and yet your hairstylist has not done anything different with your cut to contribute to this change. Then you see it in a picture, or those mirrors and cameras when you walk into your local store…a shiny scalp, and the curve of your head showing through your hair. “Am I balding?!”

Ignoring those early signs means more treatments before you see results. And there are options easily available to you.

Lets dive into the supplements that work to support hair and how they work in your body.

Biotin: Biotin is a B7 vitamin that is involved in Keratin production and for years was considered the hero vitamin for hair. Did you know that almost no one has a biotin deficiency! Most people already get enough biotin from normal foods like eggs, nuts, seeds, and meat. True deficiency is uncommon. When someone does have a deficiency, biotin can help with brittle hair, thinning hair, weak nails, and dermatitis.

Many hair supplements put extremely haigh doses of biotin in their formulas (5,000-10,000 mcg which can be up to 300x the daily requirement) which can create a few issues with blood work. These can throw off thyroid labs, hormone panels, or cardiac troponin tests. So if you are taking biotin- stop before bloodwork.

High doses of biotin can also trigger acne, especially cystic acne or acne around the chin or jawline due to it’s competition with B5.

Iron: This is one of the most common and overlooked causes of hair loss in women. To determine if you have an iron deficiency, or a Feratin deficiency, you will want to have your primary care physician include this in your bloodwork panel. Low iron can push hair into a shedding phase, reduce oxygen delivery to the hair follicle, and lead to chronic overall hair shedding and thinning hair. Other warning signs include; fatigue, and cold temperature sensitivity.

Vitamin D: This is the follicle activator! Low levels of vitmain D are common with autoimmune related hair loss and leads to poor regrowtj after shedding. Given how common this is, especially in Utah, this is a major lever for regrowth.

Vitamin B12: Hair follicles are the most metabolically active cells in the body, and B12 gives energy to those cells! This powerhouse vitamin increases cellular energy to help with sluggish follicles and slow or weak growing hair, as well as increases that oxygen delivery.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Inflammation is a silent contributor to thinning hair and is often what causes brittle hair and dry scalp. This fatty acide is key for reducing inflammation around the follicle, supporting shine and elasticity of the hair, as well as improving the overall scalp health for an optimal growing environment.

Saw Palmetto: This plant extract helps reduct the DHT conversion, protects the follicle, and slow the male and female pattern baldness we discussed earlier. This supplement is especially helpful for postpartum hair loss, and hormonal imbalances.
